Tremella
Tremella fuciformis — snow fungus or silver ear mushroom — is a gelatinous, translucent white fungus used extensively in East Asian culinary and medicinal traditions. It grows parasitically on the mycelium of wood-rotting fungi (particularly Annulohypoxylon) on dead hardwood. It has been cultivated in China for over 1,000 years.
The primary compound of interest is glucuronoxylomannan, a polysaccharide with structural similarities to hyaluronic acid — a naturally occurring polymer critical for skin hydration and tissue lubrication. Research has found that Tremella polysaccharides can hold up to 500 times their weight in water, comparable to hyaluronic acid. A 2021 study in *Marine Drugs* (examining structurally similar glucuronoxylomannan from fungal sources) noted superior skin moisturizing effects compared to standard hyaluronic acid formulations.
Tremella has also been studied for neuroprotective effects in preclinical models. Research published in *International Immunopharmacology* (2019) found that Tremella polysaccharides promoted NGF expression in PC12 cells — an observation that parallels early Lion's Mane research, though human data is absent.
Active Compounds
Glucuronoxylomannan (GXM), Beta-glucans, Protein, Dietary fibre, Vitamin D2, Iron, Calcium
Tremella grows on dead wood in tropical and subtropical regions and is now commercially cultivated globally on wood log or bag substrates in controlled humidity environments. The fruiting body is translucent-white to pale gold, formed of jelly-like, frond-like lobes that form a globular structure.
As a food, Tremella is used in sweet soups, desserts, and teas in Chinese cuisine. It has a mild, almost flavourless taste with a unique soft-gel texture that makes it distinct from all other culinary mushrooms. Dried Tremella expands significantly when rehydrated.
For cosmetic applications, Tremella extract is incorporated into serums, moisturizers, and sheet masks as a humectant. Its molecules are smaller than standard hyaluronic acid and some formulations claim superior dermal penetration, though this is debated.
