The strain's origin story is contested but most accounts credit its development to Terence McKenna via a wild collection in the Amazon, with subsequent stabilization by cultivator Steven Pollock in the 1970s–80s. What is verifiable is that the strain has been in continuous circulation since approximately the 1970s and represents a genuinely distinct genetic variant.

Analytical data is consistent: multiple Psilocybin Cup assays and third-party laboratory analyses place Penis Envy tryptamine content at 1.0–1.8% by dry weight, compared to 0.5–0.9% for standard P. cubensis strains. This represents a roughly 1.5–2x potency increase that is analytically confirmed rather than community supposition.
