Psilocybin Mushrooms · Psilocybe cubensis (cultivar)
Penis Envy
Penis Envy is the most potent widely available Psilocybe cubensis cultivar, distinguished by its characteristic bulbous, dense, often underdeveloped fruiting bodies — a consequence of a genetic mutation that reduces spore production and increases alkaloid density in the mushroom tissue.
The strain's origin story is contested but most accounts credit its development to Terence McKenna via a wild collection in the Amazon, with subsequent stabilization by cultivator Steven Pollock in the 1970s–80s. What is verifiable is that the strain has been in continuous circulation since approximately the 1970s and represents a genuinely distinct genetic variant.
Analytical data is consistent: multiple Psilocybin Cup assays and third-party laboratory analyses place Penis Envy tryptamine content at 1.0–1.8% by dry weight, compared to 0.5–0.9% for standard P. cubensis strains. This represents a roughly 1.5–2x potency increase that is analytically confirmed rather than community supposition. Community experience reports consistently align with this — users familiar with standard P. cubensis frequently describe PE experiences as categorically different in intensity rather than degree.
Active Compounds
Psilocybin (elevated concentration), Psilocin (elevated concentration), Baeocystin, Norbaeocystin
Penis Envy produces small, dense fruiting bodies with thick stalks and small caps that often struggle to open fully. The cap frequently remains partially veiled at maturity. Spore production is significantly reduced relative to standard P. cubensis strains — spore syringes from PE are difficult to produce and are often less reliable. Cultivation typically requires more precise environmental control.
Several sub-variants have been developed: Albino Penis Envy (APE), Penis Envy Uncut (PEU), Trans Envy (PE × Transkei hybrid), and others. Each has slightly different visual characteristics but broadly similar potency profiles.
Legal status: Schedule III in Canada. Identical legal status to all P. cubensis.
